Turning Optimism into success for Indian Automotive Industry
CHENNAI: June 10, 2011 saw the doors open for the 4th International Exhibition on Automotive Technologies – Automotive Engineering Show (AES) to highlight technology innovation and creativity in automotive manufacturing at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandanbakkam, Chennai.
The B2B event’s line-up of 120 participants, representing high profile plant technology vendors to car manufacturers and component suppliers, is virtually double the number of registrations for the event last year, Sameer Khedkar, Exhibition Director and Managing Director, Focussed Event Management (P) Ltd, told a press conference. The event sought to provide a buyer-seller platform by putting decision-makers in automotive manufacturing plants in direct contact with systems, processes and plant automation technology

The Automotive Engineering Show 2011 featured machinery used in the production of different vehicles to enable manufacturers to reduce costs and improve output quality. The show presented the latest tools and machinery used to carry out these tasks including production lines that are fully automated. The focus of the event was on technologies for manufacturing and there were 10 technical presentations by exhibitors on subjects of high interest to vehicle manufacturers.

Participants included over 120 leading Automotive and Industrial Automation companies. Products and systems showcased Manufacturing enhancers, IT solutions in Design, Development, Planning and Manufacturing, World renowned Manufacturers of Automation systems and Factory Control, Assembly Line System Integrators and Line builders, Machining Centers and Metal Cutting equipment including Laser cutting, Productivity Enhancers, latest concepts in Tools, Jigs and Fixtures, Specialised solutions in Welding including Laser welding, Automotive Testing, Metrology & Quality Inspection providers and End to end In-plant (Material) Handling systems.

“Flexible, synchronised & efficient production system controlled through benchmarking & shop-floor management is the way to achieve excellence in manufacturing ”said Mr. V.K. Bhalla – Chief Executive Officer (Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles Ltd.), while commenting during his visit to the event.
At the presence of a large section of the industry, Dr. Ethirajan Bhaskaran – Deputy Director Dept. of Industries & Commerce, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, said: “Innovative fora such as this provides direct interaction between government, administration and the industry thus shaping the future of Chennai’s Auto Industry, which is the base of nearly 1/3rd of India’s Automotive Industry, to strengthen direct interaction.”
“The focus is on showcasing technologies for manufacturing vehicles and components and not for displaying vehicles or components as regular auto shows did,” said Mr. Sameer Khedkar, Exhibition Director. “Chennai,” where the show was held for the second successive year, “had emerged a key automotive market.”
For the first time, the event honoured in-house innovations by instituting 10 awards for excellence in creative automation. The winners were chosen by an eminent jury.
Adjudged on the basis of innovation and creative Automation, the award winners were SIEMENS ENERGY EFFICIENCY AWARD  – Mr. Neelakandan V, Deputy Manager – Body Shop, Ford India Pvt Ltd for Energy saving in robot systems, KENNAMETAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AWARD – Mr. Piyush Thakar, Manager Paint Shop, Mahindra Vehicle Manufacturers Ltd for Intelligent Automation for Green Paint Shop, SIEMENS PRODUCTIVITY AWARD – Mr. Ramanathan Srinivasan, General Manager Manufacturing, Tata Cummins for Quick Changeover Cylinder block  Machining Line, DEMAG SAFETY AWARD – Mr. S. Nagaraj, Manager Electrical & Electronics, Maintenance Dept. Ashok Leyland Ltd for Safety Improvement & Operation Scrap Elimination in “H” Series Cylinder Block Machining, EMERGYS VALUE IMPROVEMENT AWARD – Mr. Ashok Virmani, Manager Welding, Honda Siel Cars India Limited for 100% Spot Weld Assurance.
At the function, Mr Vijay Paranjape, President AIA and Director & Member Managing Board (Siemens Ltd) cautioned, “India’s 8 – 9% GDP growth saga is not a strong reason for jubilation, since the growth percentages are derived over a low base denominator (GDP). The fact that we have one of the lowest GDP ‘per hour worked’ also means that we are doing a chunk of the lowest- end jobs in our Manufacturing sector; and that too, rather inefficiently.”

An automation kiosk and knowledge corner imparted generic inputs on shop floor technologies. Three zones earmarked for hands-on demos on emerging automation concepts were Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Machine Vision (Contour and 3D sensing), Energy Optimisation with the help of young volunteers from IIT Madras, NIT Tiruchy and MVGR University.
Vehicle and component manufacturers came visiting. Almost 5000 high profile buyers paid a visit to the delight of all exhibiting companies.
Said a prominent exhibitor. “We are pleased with the turnout of high-quality visitors, most of who commented that they would come again for the event. Analysis showed that more than 80% of all visitors were decision-makers in their respective organizations.”
The visitor community comprised OEM, third-party manufacturers, Component manufacturers from Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 manufacturers. Managers from Planning, Quality, Design dept., Production, Capital purchase, Procurement, New Projects heads, Maintenance, R & D dept. heads, Engineers from the assembly line, Technology managers etc. also formed the core visitor profile.
